Weight Watcher Connect

I haven't messed too much with Weight Watcher Connect.  It reminds me a lot of Instagram.  I have an Instagram account that I rarely use; I kind of forget about it.

None-the-less I've decided to give WW Connect a go.  I signed up again for the 100 Miles in 100 Days Challenge and am on Day 3; so I've been posting those there.

I'm not an exerciser and I've tried just about everything.  Walking is the only thing I can do.

The challenge helps getting a walk in during those cold winter months and boy has it every been cold here!  But I'm determined and with one of my 3 dogs beside me, we get it done!

A Step Back From Weight Loss

Though most of my posts will be about my weight loss journey, I do have a life outside of Weight Watchers!  If you've followed any of my previous blogs, you know that I have been a HUGE fan of Kevin Spacey.

I've seen Kevin in person many times:  plays, interviews, talks, stage door.....and I've made some lifelong friendships through this.

Like most of the other fans, I've been somewhat quiet about the recent happenings and rather perplexed that the man I've met and has done so much to help others achieve.....ended up in this Hollywood mess.  It's an entirely different person.

I was not surprised that Kevin was gay, that was somehow always suspected anyway.  I didn't like that he chose to come out the way he did.  It was either an attempt to cloud over that he may have hit on a minor or he was saying that I did this because I'm gay.  It angers me that he did that.

I believe all people live 3 lives:  a public life, a private life and a secret life.  Kevin's secret life is no longer a secret.  I don't know if that's a good or bad thing or how it really affects me.

I still think he's a great actor, I still think he's done a lot of good, I still think he adores his fans....I don't know the Kevin the media has displayed and I don't want to.

It's very confusing.....

Useful Tools

With the new diet, I decided I needed to update with some new cookware!

I had the original Weight Watchers skillets that I had bought several years ago at a discount store at a very discounted rate.  Over time they got ugly and well just weren't non-stick anymore for some reason.  I didn't want to spend a lot of money so I did some online research and these came up with good results:

They're made by a company called Tramontina and it was only $20 for a set of three!  I also got them in red as that's my color of choice!

Though they weren't expensive, I wanted to keep them in good shape and got online to see the best way to care for them.  I was certainly in for an eye opener from the web and from the instructions that came with them!  Non-stick pans need special care:

1.  They may say dishwasher safe but it's best not to wash them in one.  Let the pan cool completely and then wash in warm water.  Never put a hot pan into cold water or fill the hot pan with cold water.

2.  Don't use the spray oil (like Pam) on them.  It leaves a coating over time and makes the food stick.

3.  Don't use high heat, heat over medium or low only.

4.  Prepare them for use by first washing them in warm water, drying and then seasoning them with oil (not spray).  Just add a little oil and use a paper towel to wipe it around.  Heat the pan over medium heat for 2 minutes, let cool completely, then wash in warm water.

Wow!  I've been doing it all wrong for YEARS.  Anyway, now when I use one I wipe oil onto the pan (very very little) and only use medium heat.  It works great!

A Menu Share

Wanted to share today's menus.  I got up late, so breakfast was late and therefore I didn't eat lunch but I did go to a movie:

So I ended up going over by 2 pts for the day but still have 33 weeklies and for the first 3 days of my week - I have 3 blue dots, YAY ME!

Oh and for all you Freestyle haters - notice that I ate no chicken, seafood or beans; and nope I'm not hungry at all!

Yeah, I Know....

Some of posts may come off a bit harsh when it comes to Freestyle.  I don't mean to down anyone that doesn't like it; I just feel so passionate about it and I want others to feel that way too!

It may not be for everyone, but I just wish the ones it isn't for would just move on and find the thing that is!  And again, I have a post on here showing how to set your WW app to accommodate the old smartpoints plan.  You'll never lose the weight, if you just stand around and complain.  The classic point lovers - had to move on; the points plus lovers-had to move's now time for the smart point lovers to do the same.  Let Freestyle do it's thing.

A Day or Two

So I have gained over the holidays but put myself back in gear today, which is the start of my week.

Here's how I ate:

Breakfast:  banana, 2 eggs = 0 pts

Lunch:  3 oz. chicken breast, orange and carrots = 0 pts

Dinner:  3 oz. pork chop, peas and sweet potato fries = 10 pts

Snack:  unsweetened applesauce and WW protein bar = 2 pts

Right now I still have 11 pts left!!  If I was doing the old Smartpoints, my total would be 20 and I'd have 10 pts left.

Breakfast:  2 eggs & mushrooms = 0 pts

Lunch:  5 oz. tuna = 0 pts

Dinner:  Spaghetti with meat sauce and one breadstick = 13 pts

Snack:  Chicken tenderloin, orange, 5 saltines, laughing cow wedge = 3 pts

Total:  16 pts with 7 remaining.  On the old plan it would be 23 pts with 7 remaining.

I don't really like tracking both ways, but I just want you to see the comparison.  Don't overthink it!

So What Have We Learned About Freestyle So Far?

My posts have hopefully been informative to you and as I continue with Freestyle, I'll post about it here.

A summary:

1.   You CAN still weigh, measure and track the zero foods.  If you need portion control - DO IT!

2.   You CAN eat more than just the zero foods.  Plan the zeros around them.

3.   You CAN still do the old Smartpoints program on the WW app.  Yep....just go here to learn how:

4.   After your initial sign-up period with WW your membership will continue at the monthly rate until YOU cancel it.  Also, after cancelling check your statements to make sure nothing comes out.

5.   Stop thinking about the points you lost and work with the ones you have!

And that's a wrap!!

Freestyle Secrets

I'm going to let you in on a Freestyle are allowed to weigh, measure and/or track the zero foods.

I see way too many people complaining that they can't eat until just satisfied and that they must have portion control.

No where does WW tell you that you cannot weigh, measure and/or track the zero foods.  Oh yeah, they say you don't have to....but that doesn't mean that you can't.

Another secret?  You don't have to just eat the zero foods.  This totally amazes me that people think that!  When I see someone say that they are sick of eating just chicken, seafood and beans at every meal, I want to ask "Why are you only eating that?"

I still eat hamburgers, steak, roast beef, pork chops, spaghetti and you name it!  I plan when I'm going to do that, put it in the tracker and then plan the rest of the day around that.  If my dinner is going to cost me say 17 points....then I need to make zero point choices for my other meals with just a point here or there.  And stop worrying over the point value that the zero item use to have - that doesn't matter anymore, forget it!

And calories?  If you're going to or want to "calorie count" then Weight Watchers isn't the program for you; there are others that can accommodate you.  And even if you want to count calories along with the program, it isn't up to you to tell everyone that the calories and the program don't match up - of course they don't, they aren't suppose to.

And those of you "claiming" that your doctor says that Freestyle is the worse program ever and not to do it?  What your doctor is saying is that you shouldn't eat fruit, vegetables and lean proteins!  Wow!  What is your doctor suggesting you eat?  Look, if you don't like the program that's fine, don't do it; but don't use your imaginary doctor to try to back it up.  Just move on......

And if you really can't live without the original Smart Points plan?  Go here and learn how, all with the Weight Watchers app:  Go Back To The Old Smartpoints Plan

Let's Talk Freestyle

I want to talk Freestyle, because I know there are many having a hard time with it because they think they'll overeat and they prefer a past plan.

That's fine, I get it.

But I don't know exactly why anyone would hate Freestyle....let's see what's happening with Freestyle.

Vegetables.  With the exception of potatoes, all vegetables are now free.  On SmartPoints all veggies were free except potatoes, corn and peas.  So other than potatoes the change is minimal here.  I can't believe anyone has an issue with this.  Will you truly overeat peas and corn?  Does anyone overeat in vegetables?

Fruit.  On Smartpoints, fruit was zero.  Guess what?  On Freestyle, fruit is zero.  No change here, so no complaint can be made.

Chicken breast/Turkey breast/Seafood.  On Smartpoints, these particular proteins were very low in points.  You could eat quite a bit for 2-3 points.  On Freestyle, these are free.  There's a change here but a very minimal one.  I find it hard to believe that anyone was eating 6 chicken breasts at a meal.  If on Smartpoints you only ate one (or possibly two), then only eat that much now.  Yep, it really is that simple, you don't need a "point" to limit you.  If you do, then points have become more important then the food you're eating and that shouldn't be.

Eggs.  Eggs have gotten a bad rap through the years but as it turned out they shouldn't of!  A good filling protein that was 2 pts on Smartpoints and are now zero on Freestyle.  Eggs are very filling and I can't believe anyone is overeating on them.  If you are, you're doing something wrong.

Beans.  Another freebie with Freestyle and points on Smartpoints.  Does anyone really eat beans to an extreme?  I may have them once a week, but normally less than that.

So see?  The changes are minimal and doable.  YOU CAN DO IT!

Don't Overthink and You'll Achieve

I find that there are still people complaining over the change from Smartpoints to Freestyle and that's fine, if you read my old posts you knew how much I couldn't accept Smartpoints - I still can't, lol!  Refer here if you really can't accept the change:  So You Truly Hate Freestyle  At this link I tell you how to adjust your WW app/website to do the original Smartpoints plan; it's rather simple!

But.....I really think if you'd stop fighting Freestyle, you can get it to work and it will be an easier transition from Freestyle to Simply Filling when the time comes.  No, I don't have any inside information but I can see that that is where WW is heading.

How?  Let's look at the direction the programs have taken.

Original Points - the plan that started it all!  Using a calculation of calories, fat and fiber a point value emerged and it was easier to remember a point than the amount of calories.  On this plan you truly could eat whatever and lose weight.

Points Plus - this plan took us to the next step.  Now looking at Fat, Fiber, Carbs and Protein and making fruits zero points we were nudged to make healthier choices but still treat ourselves.

Smart Points - this was a HUGE step with our calculation changing to Calories, Sat Fat, Sugar and Protein.  Our snacky sweet things took a HUGE point hit and you really had to decide if that food was "worth it".

FreeStyle - They've taken the foods that everyone is normally eating anyway and made them zero but left you some points for all the other things.

Simply Filling - the zero list just got bigger and you have weeklies for everything else.

See?  It's heading there.  So I think you should head there too, or else you'll be complaining again.

And, by the way, while you're complaining?  You're not losing weight!

First Post of the Year

Before the month gets away from me, I wanted to give a post.

I didn't weigh in last week mostly due to some bad eating during the New Year's weekend....I think I'll still be up this week but I am back on track!

Our WW location moved to a much better location and brought some old faces back with the new.  It was nice to see everyone.

And that's it for this post!
